Special Judge Ajai Vikram Singh of Special Court in Lucknow sentenced an 82-year-old retired railway employee one year of imprisonment for having accepted a bribe of Rs100 in 1991.

The First Information Report was registered against Verma by a retired loco driver of Northern Railways, Ram Kumar Tiwari, in 1992 that he allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 150 from him for conducting a medical test to compute his pension and thus he paid him Rs 50 and sought a few days to pay the rest but he did not wish to pay the remaining amount so he lodged the complaint against Verma after which Verma was caught red handed by the CBI accepting the remaining ₹100.

Verma prayed that his punishment be restricted to the time already spent in jail for 2 days so that he does not have to serve the remaining sentence.

The Court determined that two days’ imprisonment was not enough and a year in jail would serve the purpose of justice and sentenced him one year of imprisonment.
